Public Involvement

The 30-day waiting period for the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) began with publication of the Notice of Availability (NOA) in the Federal Register and local newspapers on November 22, 2024.

During the 30-day waiting period, ending on December 23, 2024, comments on the FEIS can be submitted through one of the following methods:

The Record of Decision (ROD), announcing USGS's decision on the proposed action, will be issued no sooner than 30 days after the publication of the notice of availability in the Federal Register.

The 45-day public comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was initiated with publication of the Notice of Availability (NOA) in the Federal Register and local newspapers on June 14, 2024 and concluded on July 29, 2024. During this time, the USGS sought input on the Draft EIS from agencies, organizations, and the public.

The USGS held separate virtual and in-person public meetings on Thursday, July 18, 2024. The public meetings provided information about the Proposed Action, the analyses included in the Draft EIS, and methods for members of the community to provide feedback. A video of the virtual public meeting is available below. All project information including the Draft EIS is available for public review, consideration, and comment on this website.

The public comment period for the DEIS closed on July 29, 2024. Although comments can be submitted to USGS any time during the EIS process, comments on the Draft EIS were requested by July 29, 2024, to ensure full consideration in the Final EIS.

The public scoping period for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was initiated with the publication of the Notice of Intent (NOI) to Prepare a Draft EIS (DEIS) in the Federal Register on September 5, 2023.

The publication of the notice initiates a 45-day scoping period. During this time USGS sought input on the proposed action from agencies, organizations, and the public on potentially affected resources and the environmental issues to be considered.

USGS invited the community to attend an in-person public scoping meeting on Thursday, September 21, 2023 or a virtual public scoping meeting on Thursday, September 28, 2023. The public scoping meetings provided additional information about the Proposed Action and an opportunity for members of the community to submit comments on USGS's proposal. The meetings presented the same information.

Although comments can be submitted to USGS any time during the EIS process, scoping comments were requested by October 20, 2023, to ensure full consideration in the Draft EIS.

Final EIS Now Available

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) published the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the development of an updated facility for the NWHC on November 22, 2024.

The Final EIS, incorporates public and agency feedback and includes responses to all comments received during public review of the Draft EIS.
